How To Not Fail At Uni

Tuesday, April 01, 2014

The title makes me feel a bit premature in saying this, however so far since transferring universities I have managed to study hard and get good grades. As a result, I thought I might share with you some tips for uni and staying on top of assignments.

I'm quite anal when it comes to having everything organised, I'm a bit of a perfectionist. I'm one of those people who get excited when the coursework finally comes up online stream. Yes, one of those people. I am also a list person, so I thought I would share via a list, all the things I do to make sure I'm ready for the semester.

Tips for Uni:

Assignments

Determine when all your assignments will be due and write those dates (and times if necessary) down. Include participation points, forums, group work, exams, everything. Once everything is written down, make or buy a calendar that you can stick up on your wall and see everyday.

Diary/Planner

Once I can see where everything is set up on a calendar, I'll write the dates in my diary/planner. You can get them from stationary stores for cheap or if you really want a great one I recommend a Filofax. They're a great way to keep organised whether you like doing this weekly or daily, they have different page types that you can purchase - it's almost like a build-your-own diary. Anyway, back on track. Depending on whether you are studying via distance or travelling to classes you will want to also write in when classes are. I also like to take note of when the bulk of assignments are due as they tend to usually be around the same week every semester.

Study Planner

When I've figured out everything I need to for assignments and classes, I like to create a guide for when I can study. If you're studying extramurally it's very important to stick to a schedule and stay on top of the work that needs to get done every week. If you're studying at university then all you need to do is allocate time out of your week to do homework, assignments and general study. Usually your course co-ordinator will give you a study guide or admin guide which includes pretty much all the information you could need for your course. I like to check these to make sure I've got everything that needs to be done written down somewhere.

Week-to-Week Guide

Because I'm studying extramurally, I've had to work out a routine that works for me. However I wasn't able to get this down pat until after the first week of semester. This was because the first week is always a bit of an introductory period and so its pretty chill. However I also used this week as a practice round to figure out how much work I would actually need to do for each subject and when. This helped as I am now able to write a list or table that includes my subjects and every day of the week. For each I write what I need to get done for that week including actual school work and then work I should do for assignments. By breaking this up throughout every week I am able to keep up with assignments and not leave them to the last minute.

I'm so glad I'm able to do this as I don't have the time to leave things to the last minute. Being a full-time mummy doesn't allow for mistakes to be made, I have to stick to my weekly schedules so that I don't need to stay up late finishing off assignments. By taking care of myself in this way I'm able to also give my best efforts in caring for my son - familial gushing aside...

I accomplish my week-to-week guide by seeing what is due that week, and the following week, seeing what I didn't complete the week before, and spreading this all across a weekly table. I only write down the amount of work I know I will be able to accomplish and as I get through them I cross them off the list. I find that by physically crossing things off, I feel a sense of accomplishment that makes me want to do more.

Have you tried any of these techniques? How do you stay organised?

Missing him / Ft. MAC Full Fuchsia / Baby bro tantrums

To keep you up to date with my life and going-ons (is that even English?) I'd like to introduce you to my newest series to the blog. "Sunday's Post" will consist of anything and everything I feel the need to talk or, well, write about.

That is all.

Oh wait, no it's not. I spent the better part of last week organising my "internet life" a bit better. As a result, I have managed to plan out everything for my blog and youtube channel all the way till June. Yes, a whole two months. Get excited.

Okay. Now that's it.

Eyeshadow Palettes | Summer Travel Makeup

Monday, March 17, 2014

If you've watched any of my Youtube videos you'll notice I'm very much into eye makeup. I find I'm much more confident with wearing more around my eyes than lips. Reason: I like eating food a lot, so why wear a lipstick that will come off while doing it. So when I buy eyeshadow palettes, or pack my makeup bag, I like to choose ones that will offer me the most variety in achieving looks, while also being suitable for both day and night.

please excuse the demented case, it melted in the sun :(

MUA Undressed Palette

This drugstore palette has been used mostly on a day-to-day basis. The colours include a variety of shimmers and mattes, as well as pinks, browns and golds - my favourite colours to work with. I purchased mine from the MUA website when they had a free shipping deal on and kind of went crazy spending money. Money well spent however. This product is by far an excellent choice if you're on a budget as it retails for £4, about NZ $8. On top of that the colours are extremely pigmented, the shimmers even more so. So if you're just starting to try out eye makeup take a look at the MUA website as they have a great variety of affordable palettes to choose from.

MAC 15-pan Palette

As for my girls who are lovers of high-end products, why not try out a MAC "make-your-own" palette. I personally love these as MAC have every colour under the sun. At present I haven't filled mine up yet but some of my favourite go-to colours are in my MAC palette. However, if you're unsure about what shades will suit, or are just starting out then perhaps go for one of their duo shadows. I have the MAC duo shadow in This or That and that is another staple I take wherever I go. So don't worry if you're just beginning in makeup, going higher-end without that much knowledge is still possible without wasting hundreds of dollars.

What palette would you choose? Drugstore or high-end?

Yummy Banana & Gooey Chocolate Chip Muffins

Saturday, March 15, 2014

Banana cake has always been my absolute favourite. Every birthday since I was a little girl it was the same. That hasn't changed as I've gotten older. My mum bought me a cookbook for Christmas and I'm sure you can guess the first thing I looked up. I tried the banana cake recipe and had a couple of problems with it working for me, so I decided to half it, add chocolate and cook it in muffin trays instead. Recipe is adapted from The Best of Annabel Langbein.

Here's what you need:
  • 125g softened butter
  • 3/4 cups white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence
  • 2 ripe bananas
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 150g choc chips (or however many you like)
Beat the eggs and sugar until nice and creamy. Beat in eggs, vanilla essence and then mashed bananas. I like to mix them in separately as the mixture becomes the perfect texture to make them moist. Heat the milk till its hot and then dissolve the baking soda in it. Add to mixture. Don't freak out if the milk and baking soda foams up a lot - I thought I was doing something wrong first time that happened. Fold in baking powder and flour and mix all the lumps out. Add and mix in chocolate chips. Place in muffin trays and cook in oven at 170 degrees Celsius. They take up to half an hour to cook but make sure you keep watch as the time it takes to cook depends on the size of your trays, and how much mixture you put in each. Pull them out of the oven and dive in.

This recipe is by far the yummiest banana cake recipe I've ever tried, and an even better muffin one. They come out deliciously moist and when you add chocolate, it balances out the banana flavour perfectly.

What's your favourite cake? Do you think you might try this?

The Year Of Change (Short Version)

Thursday, March 13, 2014

Seeing as I've "recently" started this blog, I feel as though I should try to introduce you to a couple of things that have influenced me into the person I am right now. Okay, that sounds a bit heavy. I mean, I want to explain to you what happened in my life in the past year or so, as I think it will help you understand future posts I'm thinking of writing. There, that makes more sense.

If you're new to my blog or any of my social media accounts then you won't know that I was pregnant last year and am now the proud mummy of a beautiful baby boy. When I first found out I was pregnant it was kind of terrifying - my family didn't even know I had a boyfriend (I'm not really one to talk about myself much). So last year I ended up on a pretty emotional roller-coaster that will all be explained later.

Before that I was just breezing through uni, struggling to figure out who and what I wanted to be. I didn't have much drive. I would start things and never finish. I wasted my time and my parents money. It sucked. I didn't know what to do, there was this pressure to be something great but I didn't know what I wanted to be.

Fast forward to when I told my family I was pregnant. Drama, disappointment, anger. You know, the usual things a parent would feel when their kid makes mistakes. But now that I look back, I am so glad that it happened. My pregnancy was the reality check I needed, to pull my finger out of my arse (figuratively speaking of course). It wasn't just my life I was responsible for now, the little life inside was relying on me too.

After everything cleared up with my family, I knuckled down and got to thinking. About what I enjoy doing, what I really want for my life and what I want for my family's. I planned with my mum how long it would take me to finish my degree and I stuck with it.

This semester may only be my second but it is one that is so different from all the others. I am still studying and feel so determined to prove that I can do this. I'm back at the gym. I clean house, play with my son, spend time with the boyfie. I have goals I want to achieve and I'm so much more organised than I've been in my entire life.

My new, little family means the world to me and there is nothing that could make me want to mess things up. Life is good.
